Skills Checklist 3 - Advanced Obedience

Use these key words in conjunction with specific behaviors.

If you can teach obedience, and service tasks, you can teach tricks. Don’t expect your puppy to consistently do these commands. Keep reminding them, they will get the hang of it.  Some of these commands may be incorporated into specific service jobs.

BOW - “good bow”, a natural stretching posture.
BYE wave 1 foot - sit, hold a treat in your hand at head level,
CRAWL - down, hold a treat against the floor, pull it away. You may need to pull them under a table
DEAD dog - down, roll over on side, lay still.
EARS - “clean your ears”. Make this a good thing, lots of praise and positive reinforcement.
FEET - “pick up your feet”. Very helpful during grooming.
GONE -  “all gone”. Show your open/empty hand. As in no more treats.
HAND shake R - hold treats in your closed hand toward dogs right foot. Shake first then reward.
HIGH FIVE L -
HUGS - when your dog lays their head against or across you.
EYES hide - your dog puts their front paws across their eyes.
KISSES - licking can be used for an alert or revival stimulus.
LEG -
MAIL - “get the mail”.
NO shake head - draw treat back and forth,
NOSE - 
NUDGE - when your dog pushes against you with their nose. A great alert signal.
ON -
OVER/ UNDER - sit on the floor with your legs bent, draw your pup over the top of your legs, and back under.
PAPER -
PIANO - Use a childs piano and a clicker, great for teaching dogs to hit a target. Don’t expect any great tunes.
PRAY -
ROLL over -  very helpful for grooming. You want your dog to be  very comfortable on their back.
SCRATCH - little dogs can scratch at the door, or at your leg, larger dogs, not such a good idea.
SHAKE body - “good shake”, after a bath, or “shake your head”, when cleaning ears.
SLEEP -
SNUGGLE - lay down, have your dog lay against you.
TAIL -
WHAT tip head - strange noises will illicit this response.
WIPE feet -
YEA! Both feet - standing on back legs, wave both feet in the air.
