Skills Checklist 2 - Intermediate Obedience

Use these key words in conjunction with specific behaviors.

BARK - find a trigger, the doorbell, a knock on the door, whatever gets a bark out of your dog. “good bark”.
Bath - tell your dog, “take a bath”. Teach them to step into the tub.
BRING it - once your dog has learned to pick up something, have them follow you.
Brush -  tell your dog when it is time to brush them out.
Car -  “go to”, or “get in the car”.
Coat - “put your coat on”.
DOOR - “go out the door”.
DRINK - “get a drink”.
DROP IT - hold onto an item your dog has in their mouth, “drop it”. Reward.
EAT - “eat your food”.
EXCUSE ME - use when you need your dog to move aside, to get out of  your way.
FETCH - using a tennis ball, slit the seam, insert treats. When they pick the ball up, and drop it. Give them a treat.
GARBAGE - “pick up the garbage”,  “throw it away”.
GET it - make a game of it with toys, or treats.
GIVE - when you want something put into your hand, instead of dropped.
HEEL hut! - place treats in your closed hand by your leg, when your dog is in position, release a treat.
HURRY - when you want your dog to move a little faster to keep up with you.
IN! - “go in the house”, “get in the tub”.
LAP -
LAUNDRY - puppies love laundry day, stinky socks are great. They can help pick clothes up, and move them.
LEASH - “get your leash”.
MOVE - “move over”.
NOW -
OUT! -  “go out”, or “get  out” of something.
OFF - use “off” instead of down to get off or stay off the furniture.
PAW - place a treat in your closed hand, hold it at chest level, wait until the dog picks their foot up, “good paw”. Reward.
PLAY - I use “go play” as a release from working.
RETRIEVE - retrieval is important for many types of service work.
STAND - lead the dog into a standing position, reward.
STAY - put your dog in a down position, “stay”. Take a few steps away. Step back into a heel position, “good stay”.
TAKE IT - in down position, place a treat on the floor “leave it”,  after your dog looks away, “take it”.
TOY - “get your toy”, later “pick up your toys”, “bring it”, and  “drop it” into a box.
TUG - playing a gentle game of tug of war, teaches your dog to pull. Tug to open doors, bring  wheelchair, walker...
