Poodle Play
Poodles are the most playful dogs I have ever met. Their fun loving nature is part of what makes them so trainable. They love to play games, so you can turn your training into a game. Holding on to your dog, especially when they see a "friend", can be a bit of a challenge. I believe they have super springs in
their legs. An excited poodle can jump flat footed, 3 or 4 feet in the air.
You would think from their expressions that they are fighting, but they seem to know it is all in fun. Some other animals may not recognize this as play, but as a sign of aggression and respond accordingly. When a horse puts their head down and their ears back they are saying, "back off". When poodles bow they are saying, "let the games begin".
You especially want to be aware of other dogs. A playful gesture can provoke a deadly attack from a more aggressive breed of dog. It is like teaching your child that every stranger is not their friend. You hate to shatter their innocent view of the world, but it has to be done for their safety, and yours. Having to wade into the middle of a dog fight to rescue your dog can be a bit hazardous to your health as well. When a dog attacks another dog, they most likely will not hesitate to bite you when you interfere. Hopefully they will have leashes or at least collars to pull them apart with. Learn to recognize the typical signs of aggression.
The best defense is good obedience training. Teach your dog to pay attention to you, sit, down, and stay. Leave it means to ignore the distraction or temptation. Now you can go find a safe yard and another friendly dog and let them have a good jump, run, romp, and a good wrestling match.
